Yao Lanten Headdress

20th century

This Yao Lantien headdress is called a "celestial crown"

When a lantien girl reaches puberty and undergoes her initiation rites, she is entitled to make and wear a celestial crown. The girl spends over two days to assemble the crown. Most Yao Lantien women wear this crown daily, generally covered by a small indigo cotton kerchief. Rolls of false hair made by synthetic fibers are used to add volume to the complete headdress.
